Atlanta-Hilton Head Spring Break

Texas has very early Spring Breaks, so it is hard to find a warm place to visit. This Spring Break was no exception. It was rainy and cold with highlights of sunshine. We decided to head to Atlanta, Georgia, and see the seaside towns of Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. All three of these cities are worlds apart from each other. One is a vibrant metropolitan city deep in the heart of the south. Another is a classical city that has a long history of shipping and southern culture. The last one is a modern beach town hidden among the trees.

We flew into Atlanta, and flying into Atlanta can be relatively inexpensive because it is a hub. There is a lot to see and do in Atlanta and the surrounding region. Atlanta is a huge airport, but it is easy to navigate. It is like any large city with small kindness and large segments of disdain for their job and the traveler. We landed up renting a car because we were traveling further than Atlanta. Like most airports these days, you need to hop on a bus to rent a car, and the rental car area is off-campus. Most airports have outgrown the ability to have a rental car place on campus. They have turned that area into a parking lot and pushed the rental car area a short bus ride away.

After grabbing our luggage and the car, we headed to our hotel. First, we stopped at the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House, which is conveniently located near the airport. The proximity was beneficial because we were starving. Then we headed downtown, where our hotel was located. We rarely stay downtown because of the expense and additional fees added to your bill, for example parking. Staying by the centennial park is an excellent idea if you can find a deal. We used our Hilton hotel points and stayed at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Atlanta at Centennial Park

The next day we headed to the Centennial Park and the Georgia Aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium is a must for any family that has a curious child that loves Marine Biology. Unfortunately, there weren't many immediate options for lunch, so we ate at the Aquarium. It was okay and overpriced. Also, a little confusing and crowded. Next, we headed across the park to the World of Coca-Cola. It is a museum for those that love nostalgia and Coca-Cola. Even though it was cold with threatening skies, we could also enjoy the gardens and landscape of Centennial Park. We ended our day with pizza at Max's Coal Oven Pizzeria. It was a short wait and an exceptional thin bubbly crust pizza.

The following day we headed out of town to Savannah, Georgia, but we made a few stops along the way. Our first stop was at The Varsity for lunch. We felt like we had stepped back in time.

Next, we stopped at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. The National Historical Park gives you a glimpse into the beautiful way Atlanta has changed over the last 100 years. You get to experience the life and environment where Martin Luther King Jr. grew up and why he returned to the city he loved.

Our next day was in Savannah, Georgia, and we spent it exploring the city. We visited Juliet Gordon Low's Birthplace. It is a short of Mecca for Girl Scouts, and since we have two Girl Scouts, it was a stop we wanted to explore. We wandered around the city and enjoyed the architecture from the Victorian Age and the Modern architecture of the 1950s. We decided to have lunch at The Lady and Sons, which is Paula Deen's restaurant. Not our best choice for lunch, and we won't be back, and we can't recommend it.

We only spent a day in Savannah and then headed to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Hilton Head was the primary purpose of our trip. We wanted to check out the Disney Vacation Club property at Hilton Head, Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort. Since our Spring Break was so early in March, the points per night were reasonable. We were able to book a two-room suite overlooking the pool. We had plenty of space to relax and take in the amenities at the resort. Hilton Head Island is a newer development than I expected. We didn't get out much to eat and enjoyed the island life, but we did check out One Hot Mama's American Grille. This restaurant was better than expected and very family-friendly. These two experiences alone are worth a trip to South Carolina.
